GoodVibes: YMCA Swansea

GoodVibes is an inclusive LGBTQ+ Youth group, that supports young people between the ages of 11 and ­25. It provides a safe space that reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation. Young people can build peer friendships within a community so that they belong, contribute, and thrive. It is a group where young people can be surrounded by likeminded individuals in an environment that promotes respecting other people’s choices, citizenship, and cultural identity.

GoodVibes provides young people with the confidence to explore their own identity around people that really understand and care. Young LGBTQ+ people are more likely to face bullying, discrimination, and social isolation, and in turn are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and self-harm. GoodVibes equips young people with the tools they need to be understanding and have positive attitudes and behaviours around equality and diversity. GoodVibes is also extremely active in the community and is passionate about having a voice for the LGBTQ+ community.

It’s clear from the testimony provided that young people who attend GoodVibes feel it is their safe place, their family away from home and many young people rely on the group as being central to their lives and identity. The judging panel described GoodVibes as a fabulous project that is having a massive impact on its young people and their communities. They felt is clearly demonstrates excellence in ensuring that youth work opportunities are accessible and inclusive.
