This project was conceived in response to young people and their families wanting to understand what will happen to them when they enter the criminal justice system.

The ‘Explaining a Bureau’ film was created by 13 young people over a period of 12 months. All of the young people involved had direct experience of the criminal justice system; they were able to turn this negative experience into a positive by creating a resource to help their peers. The film will be distributed to all 22 local authorities and has already proved to be a useful resource.

The project has helped to develop the young people’s confidence as well as increasing their communication skills when dealing with a wide range of people, including those in positions of authority.

The judges felt that the project demonstrated excellence in using digital media to create engagement opportunities for a traditionally hard to engage cohort of young people.
