Welsh Ministers have a duty under section 79 of the Government of Wales Act 2006 to publish a report setting out how the proposals in our Sustainable Development Scheme have been implemented, and to lay a copy of this report before the National Assembly.   I am therefore very pleased to lay before the National Assembly a copy of our Sustainable Development Annual Report for the period April 2010-March 2011.

This is our third Sustainable Development Annual Report since we published our Sustainable Development Scheme, One Wales: One Planet, although it is my first since becoming Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development.

It provides a body of evidence to demonstrate how we have used sustainable development as our central organising principle across the Welsh Government to ensure all our decisions promote the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of people and communities in Wales, now and in the future. It shows how this approach is making a real and long lasting difference to people’s quality of life. We also report on how we have taken forward the 18 specific actions contained in our Sustainable Development Scheme.

The report includes commentary on our Sustainable Development Indicators, which chart progress we are making towards becoming a sustainable nation.

The report also includes an independent commentary from Peter Davies, our Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, and Cynnal Cymru, the body that supports the Commissioner and which promotes sustainable development within Wales.

I hope this Annual Report encourages organisations, communities and individuals to continue working with us to build on progress and strengthen sustainable development in Wales.
