On 18 July 2013 I launched a 12-week public consultation on a draft noise action plan for Wales, which set out how the Welsh Government, local authorities, Natural Resources Wales, Public Health Wales and other public bodies would work together and make use of the most up-to-date information to manage noise.
Today I am publishing a summary of the responses to the consultation and the finalised noise action plan, amended in light of responses received and any minor corrections and factual updates.
The Environmental Noise Directive requires that we draw up new noise action plans for major roads, major railways and large urban areas and report them to the European Commission by 18 January 2014.
We know that uncontrolled levels of noise can be detrimental to our general health and wellbeing, and the Welsh Government is committed to taking action to protect communities in Wales from high levels of noise and to provide them with access to tranquil and peaceful areas in which they can relax. This consolidated noise action plan sets out how we will work with our partner organisations to minimise noise pollution and ensure that noise levels are considered in future decision-making.
This statement is being issued during recess in order to keep members informed. Should members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Assembly returns I would be happy to do so.
