I am pleased to appoint Professor Calvin Jones, Mark McKenna and Paul Griffiths and to the board of Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

I would like to thank Chris Blake, Elizabeth Haywood and Howard Davies for their service and commitment to NRW. They leave the board after serving six years.

I attach great importance to the role of NRW and the work of its board members. Calvin, Mark and Paul each bring their own skills and experiences, which will help strengthen the board and help NRW to grow and play its full role in achieving our climate change objectives.

The NRW board will need to make important decisions in the coming months as it progresses with our Programme for Government commitments. I made the decision to directly appoint Calvin, Mark and Paul to ensure effective board functioning and governance at this crucial time.

They will serve for a 12-month period and be remunerated at £350 a day for between 36 to 48 days per year, starting on 1 September 2021. A new recruitment campaign for the three board positions will take place after 12 months.

These appointments have been overseen by the Commissioner for Public Appointments, who ensures they are made in accordance with the Governance Code and the principles of public appointments.

This statement is being issued during recess in order to keep members informed. Should members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Senedd returns I would be happy to do so.
