In November 2014, I responded to a Plenary debate on support for the transgender community.

As the Minister with responsibility for Equality, I am committed to coordinating actions across the Welsh Government to address inequalities for transgender people and asked my officials to develop a Welsh Government Transgender Action Plan.

I know work is needed to remove the barriers faced by many transgender people. Officials have engaged with representatives of transgender groups in Wales to understand these barriers and the actions which matter to them. These discussions have helped shape some of the proposals the Welsh Government are taking forward.  I would now like to engage further and hear the views of as many people as possible.

Our Transgender Action Plan will be a vehicle to identify and address these barriers and will drive forward cross-Government actions to make a real difference to people’s lives.

Today I am launching a consultation document seeking views on the Welsh Government’s proposed actions to further transgender equality in Wales. I am very keen to hear the views of our stakeholders. I would encourage transgender organisations and individuals to take part in this consultation to inform our understanding of the issues affecting transgender people on a day to day basis and to influence and shape the Action Plan.

The consultation document provides more detail on our proposals and how to respond and can be accessed on the Welsh Government website. The consultation will run for 12 weeks until the 11th September 2015.
