The Welsh Government has stated that it will do all that it can, using all available policy levers, to help address the causes and symptoms of the recession in Wales. In support of this I am determined to ensure that national planning policy and advice supports sustainable economic growth and economic renewal. In November 2012 Planning Policy Wales (PPW) was updated to reinforce the economic component of sustainable development and to ensure that economic considerations are factored into the planning decision making process.

On 10th June I issued for consultation a draft of a new Technical Advice Note (TAN) on Economic Development which supports the policy in PPW and gives detailed technical guidance to local planning authorities on implementing national policy.  The TAN requires local planning authorities to assess the economic benefit associated with allocating sites and determining planning applications for economic development.

The consultation on the draft TAN is running for 12 weeks from the 10th June and responses received will be analysed and used to inform the drafting of the final version of the TAN which is anticipated to be issued towards the end of the year.
