On 13 February, I announced my intention to bring forward legislation which will ensure that care leavers are exempt from council tax from 1 April.  Today, I am pleased to announce that I have laid the necessary legislation before the Assembly.

This follows a period of engagement and consultation with local government, the third sector and individual taxpayers.  In our recent consultation on council tax exemptions for care leavers, over 90% of respondents expressed their support for our proposals.

The Welsh Government is committed to doing everything we can to support care leavers and enable their successful transition into adulthood and independent living.

This is an important milestone in delivering our commitment to make council tax fairer. We have an extensive programme of work in progress to examine how the council tax system can be improved over the short, medium and longer terms to continue delivering on this commitment.
