As a Government, we want to reduce the number of road traffic collisions, particularly those which result in serious and fatal injuries. That is why the Programme for Government includes a commitment to target high-risk road users.

Today I am issuing a consultation on the Road Safety Delivery Plan, which sets out our strategic approach to road safety until 2020.  The Plan includes:

  • An ambitious vision for road safety, acknowledging that all deaths are avoidable and our commitment to doing all we can to tackle these;
  • Targets for casualty reduction, to be achieved by 2020;
  • A new approach to the delivery of effective road safety – focused on achieving tangible outcomes, based on evidence and evaluation of activities;
  • Specific actions for the Welsh Government and our partners in respect of vulnerable road user groups, collision causation and road safety engineering, to reduce casualties and the severity of those casualties.

The consultation will end on 13 December 2012 and I want as many responses as possible to help determine the final shape of the Delivery Plan. I expect to publish the final Plan in early 2013.

This statement is being issued during recess in order to keep members informed. Should members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Assembly returns I would be happy to do so.
