There have been recent reports in the press raising concerns about the provision of services covering the collection and disposal of clinical waste in England and Scotland. Many of these articles have focused on the storage of body parts and the company concerned exceeding its permits, issued by the Environment Agency, for clinical waste storage on particular sites.

The company concerned, Healthcare Environmental Services Limited, is not responsible for the collection and disposal of clinical waste in Wales. The NHS All Wales Clinical Waste Contract was awarded to another unrelated company. The contract is managed by NHS Shared Service Partnership – Procurement Services on behalf of NHS Wales. Regular meetings are held between the company and NHS Wales representatives to monitor the performance of the contract. No issues of concern have been reported with the contract in Wales.
