Welsh students enrolled in UK Higher Education Providers (HEPs)
- There were 108,165 students from Wales enrolled in UK Higher Education Providers (HEPs) in 2022/23, 2% less than 2021/22.
- There were 86,210 undergraduate students from Wales in 2022/23, 1% less than 2021/22.
- There were 21,960 postgraduate students from Wales in 2022/23, 5% less than 2021/22.
- 60% of postgraduates studied part-time, compared to 30% of undergraduates.
- In 2022/23 there were 63% more enrolments from women than men.
- The number of full-time, undergraduate enrolments from the most deprived areas in Wales (WIMD 2019 Quintile 1) decreased by 2%, from 10,120 enrolments in 2021/22 to 9,940 enrolments in 2022/23.
- The number of full-time, undergraduate enrolments from the least deprived areas in Wales (WIMD 2019 Quintile 5) decreased by 3% (from 15,705 enrolments in 2021/22 to 15,195 enrolments in 2022/23).
Enrolments in Welsh Higher Education Providers (HEPs)
- Enrolments at Welsh HEPs increased by 4%; from 149,045 in 2021/22 to 154,385 in 2022/23.
- The number of undergraduates increased by 1%; from 110,385 in 2021/22 to 111,745 in 2022/23.
- The number of postgraduate students increased by 10%; from 38,660 in 2021/22 to 42,640 in 2022/23.
- 36% of postgraduates studied part-time, compared to 25% of undergraduates.
- The most popular subject group at Welsh HEPs in 2022/23 was Business and management, followed by Subjects allied to medicine.
Cross border flows of full-time students 2022/23
- Wales is a net importer of full-time students from the UK.
- There were 44,080 full-time students from other UK countries at Welsh HEPs, compared to 28,385 full-time students from Wales studying at HEPs in the rest of the UK.
- 41% of full-time undergraduates from Wales studied in England, and 36% of full-time postgraduates from Wales studied in England.
Higher education qualifications
- The number of qualifications awarded to students from Wales decreased by 4%; from 31,510 in 2021/22 to 30,315 in 2022/23.
- The number of qualifications awarded by HEPs in Wales increased by 3%; from 45,120 in 2021/22 to 46,465 in 2022/23.
