Unify project
Culture award 2023 winner
UNIFY is Welsh creative studio co-founded by visual artists Yusuf Ismail and Shawqi Hasson. Responsible for some of the most important art and cultural projects in the city, UNIFY’s mission is to make the creative industry in Wales more inclusive and accessible.
UNIFY use buildings within Cardiff for their murals which promote inclusivity within sport and have since developed educational initiatives to help young people express themselves and promote equality and diversity.
The studio’s ground-breaking art installation "My City, My Shirt", depicting Black, Asian and ethnic minority Cardiff residents in the Cardiff City FC shirt, paved the way for a number of high profile collaborations, including works with American sports brands such as Adidas and WWE.
For many Welsh people is has been the first time they have seen themselves reflected in the city around them. It has become synonymous with the changing landscape of the capital, using its buildings as a canvas for contemporary designs depicting Black Welsh people.
In 2020, UNIFY delivered its first educational initiative “Visionary”. A programme designed to help young people from Black, Brown and minority communities in Cardiff to express themselves creatively and develop skills that will benefit them irrespective of what career path they decide to choose.
