Sketty Mosque
Nominated for Community Champion award
Sketty Mosque & Community Centre, established in 2023 in Swansea, serves both Muslim and non-Muslim communities. Since it opened, the mosque has become a vital institution that serves not only as a place of worship but also a social, cultural and educational hub for the community and helps foster inclusion and community cohesion.
The Mosque has been at the forefront of promoting interfaith dialogue and cultural integration by arranging interfaith events, so that individuals from different faiths gain a better understanding of each other’s religion and culture. It also provides academic support for young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, by offering lessons in Maths, Physics, Arabic, and Religious Studies to prepare for GCSEs, A levels and the Welsh Baccalaureate exams.
The mosque also provides opportunities for young people to take part in volunteering and other events which helps teach them social responsibility as well as help combat social isolation.
One of the mosque’s key initiatives is the Sketty Tea Lounge 50+ Club, which engages over fifty elderly participants each week, many of whom are from diverse ethnic communities, and helps combat loneliness and give them a sense of belonging.
The mosque’s work with sanctuary families and other vulnerable people, has made a real difference to their lives. Weekly food and clothing deliveries ensure that basic needs are met for those needing help. The mosque’s commitment to tackling period poverty is also groundbreaking and is the only mosque in Wales that offers free sanitary products-a lifeline for many women by providing dignity and access to essential hygiene products.
