Nominated for Business award

Lucy Cohen is a businesswoman from Cardiff. After an apprenticeship with AAT, she founded Mazuma with a childhood friend at the age of 23, creating the UK’s first subscription model in accountancy. Mazuma is now a multi-million pound company and creates employment opportunities in Wales and beyond. Mazuma was inspired by Lucy’s own childhood experiences of watching her family, people who worked in the creative industries, struggle with their taxes. She has always been passionate about providing access to good financial information to everyone, regardless of their background.

With 22 years in the accounting industry, Lucy is widely recognised as an industry expert, and has been commended for her work in breaking down barriers for people to access the profession.

In 2024, Lucy was elected to the role of Vice President of AAT.

In 2022, Lucy’s book, Forget the First Million won Best Short Business Book at the Business Book Awards. That same year, she was awarded the AAT Past Presidents Award for her work in mental health in the accounting profession.

In 2021, Lucy was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Accounting Excellence Awards for exceptional service and contribution to the accounting profession and working towards the good of the wider profession.

Lucy is fiercely passionate about social mobility and gender equality. In 2020 she spearheaded a public campaign to improve pain relief provision for female medical procedures; a campaign which resulted in policy change and was covered extensively in the national press.
