Bethan Owen
Young Person award 2019 winner
Bethan is a sixth form pupil at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan in Abergele. Since a young age, she has been helping her father to care for her mother who suffers from epilepsy.
When she was 6 years old, Bethan was introduced to karate by her parents to give her a focus away from the responsibilities at home. By the age of 12, Bethan was a black belt and a qualified karate instructor.
Once qualified, Bethan opened her first not-for-profit karate club for other young carers between the ages of 6 and 9. She has since opened a 2nd club in Llandudno. These clubs support young carers to develop confidence, self-esteem and have a break from caring responsibilities. During the classes she supports them through their daily challenges as well as teaching them karate. Bethan offers these classes to other young carers who might could not afford this type of class. She only charges a nominal fee to cover the cost of the premises.
The classes are an invaluable way for young carers, like herself to find fun, friendship and support.
