Population estimates of people’s sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales by age, sex, general health, disability, highest level of qualification, and economic activity status.
This is not the latest release in the series: Census of population
On 5 September 2024, Emma Rourke, Deputy National Statistician, wrote to Ed Humpherson (Office for National Statistics (ONS)), Head of the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR), to request that the gender identity estimates from Census 2021 are no longer accredited official statistics and are classified as official statistics in development. The change in designation was confirmed by OSR on 12 September 2024. To reflect this change in designation, the accredited official statistics logo has been removed from this release.
This statistical bulletin contains additional summary data on sexual orientation and gender identity by various socio-economic outcomes for individuals who were usual residents of Wales at the time of the Census, 21 March 2021. It tells us how these outcomes varied for different sexual orientations and gender identities across Wales. The bulletin also contains analysis by age and sex for context. All data used in the analysis in this release can be accessed on the ONS website by following the Census 2021 sexual orientation and gender identity data combining multiple variables (ONS) page, and the recent ONS release Sexual orientation, further personal characteristics, England and Wales: Census 2021.

The ONS have completed further quality work to provide more detailed information on the uncertainty associated with the Census 2021 gender identity estimates and guidance on their appropriate use. Please see their Census 2021 gender identity estimates for England and Wales, additional guidance on uncertainty and appropriate use article (ONS) published on 26 March. We are reviewing this statistical bulletin using the ONS guidance and may add further information on appropriate uses of the data.
