This report presents the findings of a study undertaken to explore how assessment for learning (AfL) can support learner progression in language learning.

The report provides a synthesis of the evidence and discusses areas and considerations for further development, in the context of the Curriculum for Wales from 2022. These include:

  • further research on AfL to support learners’ plurilingualism and cross-linguistic skills, and to support lesser used languages
  • examining the need for professional learning opportunities for teachers to develop AfL practice in relation to language learning
  • sourcing further evidence on the role of language proficiency in the delivery of AfL strategies
  • considering learners’ ideas about ways of assessing their own language learning
