This research aims to understand the experiences and views of newly qualified teachers (NQTs) about their induction.
This is the latest release
The research found that just over half of teachers commencing induction complete it within a year.
There is a range of excellent, detailed information to support induction. However, many NQTs are not fully aware of its importance. This may result in them missing induction opportunities.
The current arrangements are quite well-suited for school-employed NQTs, however, the experience of induction for supply NQTs is challenging.
Six recommendations are made, including:
- improving communications about and support for NQTs undertaking induction and making some support available for a period after induction
- strengthening the requirements of supply agencies, and providing opportunities for longer placements for supply NQTs within a single school
