The grant will support some 41 projects across 16 local authorities and create an additional 2818 school and childcare places for Welsh medium learners. This is in addition to the £5 million for the Pantycelyn development announced earlier this year, making a total of £ 51 million to support Welsh education.
The Minister made the announcement today during a visit to Ysgol Gyfyn Gwynllyw in Pontypool which will be receiving a new primary school and nursery on the site as a result of the Welsh Medium Capital Grant.
Also among the 41 projects that will now be funded through the grant are new Welsh medium primaries in Merthyr Tydfil and Torfaen, the first ever Welsh medium school in Monmouth town, and an innovative Welsh language centre in Denbighshire.
Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan said:
“These projects will make a significant contribution to the provision of Welsh medium education. Having a comfortable, modern, fit-for-purpose environment in which to learn is vital to ensuring young people have the best possible education. This extra funding will mean that even more of our students will be able to benefit from excellent facilities to learn through the medium of Welsh.
“In addition to creating new schools and expanding current sites, this extra funding will give the green light to Welsh language centres across Wales. These centres make learning Welsh as a second language much more accessible and that’s vital if the language is to continue to grow and thrive.
“Our challenge of reaching a million Welsh speakers by 2050 is a significant challenge and education is key to our success. By investing in new Welsh medium schools and improving and increasing the teaching of Welsh in English medium schools we are paving the way for the future and laying the right foundations to reach this target.”
Minister for Children, Huw Irranca-Davies said:
“Providing early opportunities for Welsh learning is vital if we are to increase the number of Welsh speakers, and I’m pleased today’s funding announcement will also go towards increasing the number of childcare places for Welsh medium learners.
“By working together across government and combining funding from both the Welsh Medium Capital and Childcare Offer Capital Grants we have been able to get better return on investment, resulting in better services for young people.”

1. Denbighshire - Welsh Language Centre at the Ysgol Glan Clwyd
2. Wrexham - Extension to the oversubscribed Ysgol Bro Alun
3. Monmouthshire - New seedling Welsh medium primary school in Monmouth
4. Monmouthshire - Extend capacity of Ysgol y Ffin
5. Conwy - One class extension within Ysgol Awel y Mynydd
6. Conwy - Replacement of existing inadequate mobile accommodation for the Cylch Meithrin at Ysgol Llanfair Talhaiarn with a permanent classroom
7. Conwy - Amalgamation of Old Colwyn and Colwyn Bay Cylch Meithrin in a new purpose built building at Ysgol Bod Alaw.
8. Cardiff - Expand Welsh medium primary in North Cardiff
9. Cardiff - 3 new Cylch Meithrin settings linked to primary schools across different areas of the city
10. Cardiff - Reorganisation of primary provision in central Cardiff and expand Welsh medium places by 1FE
11. Merthyr Tydfil - New Welsh medium primary school
12. Merthyr Tydfil - Reconfiguration of Ysgol Rhyd y Grug to accommodate 2 additional classrooms and to increase nursery and pre-nursery provision.
13. RCT - Creation of a childcare facility at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Aberdâr,
14. RCT - Relocate an established Cylch Meithrin from its current venue to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Abercynon

16. RCT - Replacing of mobile at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llantrisant with a permanent two classroom extension with additional age appropriate toilets and cloakroom space.
17. RCT - New pre-school childcare building at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Ynyswen to enable relocation of the Cylch Meithrin from old demountable
18. RCT - New early years building at Ysgol Llanhari to enable relocation of the Cylch Meithrin
19. Neath Port Talbot - An extra classroom and a Welsh medium childcare offer at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cwmllynfell.
20. Neath Port Talbot - 2 extra classrooms and a Welsh medium childcare offer at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tyle’r Ynn, Briton Ferry
21. Neath Port Talbot - Refurbishments and improvements including provision of 3 extra classrooms and additional child care spaces at Pontardawe.
22. Bridgend - Welsh-medium childcare provision (full day care, sessional childcare and out-of-school) in Bettws

29. Caerphilly - Expansion of childcare spaces enabling 30 extra statutory places at Ysgol Ifor Bach.
30. Caerphilly - Expanding provision (two additional classrooms) at Ysgol Penalltau
31. Caerphilly - Expanding provision (additional classrooms) at Ysgol Cwm Derwen
32. Caerphilly - Expanding/improving provision at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Y Castell (including 2 additional classrooms)
33. Caerphilly - Provision of additional classroom space at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Bro Allta to increase capacity.
34. Torfaen - New primary school with nursery on the current Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw site, extending the age range of YGG Gwynllyw from 11-18 to 3-18.
35. Torfaen - Modify Greenmeadow Primary to establish a 10 FTE place Mudiad Meithrin pre school facility for ages 2 to 3
36. Flintshire - New purpose built pre-school provision onsite at Ysgol Glanrafon thus co-locating early years provision and promoting Welsh medium take-up.
37. Flintshire - Remodelling and Extensions to Ysgol Glanrafon, Mold to increase capacity
38. Blaenau Gwent - Establishment of seedling primary provision leading to new build for Tredegar/Sirhowy Valley
39. Anglesey - Child care unit at new school in Llangefni (replacement school for Bodffordd and Corn Hir)
40. Carmarthenshire 1 - Establish permanent, strategically distributed dedicated Welsh Language Learning/Immersion Centre
