The Inshore Vessel Monitoring System (IVMS) is a GPS based monitoring system which at regular intervals provides data to the Fisheries Authority on the location, course and speed of vessels. The device collects data allowing monitoring behaviour of fishing vessels in real-time. The installation of monitoring devices will be necessary for any fishing boat of less than 12 metres in length operating within Welsh waters under upcoming legislation.

Why we need to process your personal information?

In order to ensure your vessel complies with the upcoming legislation the Welsh Government needs to process some personal information about you. The processing of the information enables Welsh Government to carry out its public task and to exercise its official authority. The Welsh Government will be Data Controller for personal information processed in relation to the IVMS.

We need to process your name, email address and other contact details, telephone number and your vessel information (including the name of skipper and the vessel’s location) to arrange the installation of a monitoring device onto your vessel, to arrange for payment of data charges, and for the warranty of the monitoring device (three years). Installation, warranty, and data billing will be undertaken by a supplier acting on behalf of Welsh Government.

Who will have access to your personal data?

Your personal data will be shared with the supplier of the IVMS devices for the purposes of fitting the device(s) to your vessel(s), warranty and data billing.

How long will my personal information be kept for?

The personal information will be retained by Welsh Government for a period of three years after the monitoring device is successfully installed onto your vessel in line with Welsh Government Records Management & Retention Policy.
