We want to give workers who have been furloughed due to Covid-19 access to informal e-learning provision through well-known websites. The e-learning provision on offer is aimed at supporting individuals to update skills, maintain mental health, and help them think about future careers options.

Improving awareness and access to on-line provision at this time is a valuable resource for individuals who are worried about their jobs and are therefore looking to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Scoping and testing has taken place. All of the free on-line provision:

  • is already available
  • is completely on-line
  • is being hosted by a well-known company that has significant experience in the field of e-learning and significant numbers of learners that have already been through their courses
  • has the capacity to scale up to meet increased numbers

The online training is available on the Working Wales website.

Careers Wales have created a new landing page on the Working Wales portal specifically for furloughed workers.

Provision is currently limited, particularly on Welsh Language courses. It includes:

  • Business Wales Online Support Services
  • Careers Wales Courses in Wales portal
  • BBC Bitesize
  • Alison
  • OpenLearn
  • FutureLearn
  • Oxford Home Study College
  • The Good Things Foundation

Provision from the Open University will be the preferred option for support due to its wide range of courses and Welsh Language resources.

Increasing the number of Welsh Language courses available is important. Therefore if a particular course delivered in English would also be beneficial in Welsh, we will take the necessary steps to ensure that the material is translated.

Over the next couple of months, the aim will be to deliver a broader skills recovery package to furloughed workers in Wales, with a wider set of online learning materials being made available.

Information and professional Careers Advice and Guidance continues to be available over the telephone, online and through the Working Wales web chat facilities.

How this will help furloughed workers

The e-learning provision is aimed at improving individuals’ knowledge levels across a broad range of areas. The informal courses available will enable individuals to brush up on existing skills, learn about new topics, and develop their understanding of ICT to learn on-line.

Many individuals will be concerned about how Covid-19 will affect their employment in the future. The on-line provision will offer advice and guidance for those who are searching for direction.

Many of the resources available are focused on supporting the wellbeing of furloughed workers through this difficult time. By taking part in the on-line courses, the mind is kept active and individuals can gain self-confidence.
