10. Empty properties
When an empty property is being sold after the death of the owner the property is exempt of Council Tax for 6 months after the granting of probate.
Some homes do not get a Council Tax bill for as long as they stay empty. These include empty homes:
- of someone in prison (except for not paying a fine or council tax)
- of someone who’s moved into a care home or hospital
- that have been repossessed
- that can’t be lived in by law, for example if they’re derelict
You may be eligible for a Council Tax discount if your home is undergoing major repair work or structural changes.
If you think you may be eligible you should contact your local authority Council Tax department.
