The economic downturn has seen an increased need for debt and money advice for those having difficulty managing their income and expenditure or who have reached a crisis point.

The funding for advice provision comes from a variety of sources including the UK Government, the Legal Services Commission (LSC) and local authorities. In addition, the Welsh Government supports homelessness advice services;the specific benefit take-up Citizens Advice Cymru initiative "Better Advice: Better Lives"; outreach debt and welfare benefits advice in 36 Communities First cluster areas and other front-line advice services, including discrimination advice.

Where to get help

Direct.gov

Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB) may well be your first port of call for financial advice. They provide free, confidential and independent advice, available face-to-face and by telephone. Most offer home visits and some also provide email advice. Their advice can help people tackle problems about debt, benefits, housing, legal matters, discrimination, employment, immigration, consumer and other issues. The Welsh Government is providing £2.2million funding per year to Citizens Advice Cymru to support the work they are undertaking across Wales in supporting the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people. This service provides face-to-face advice services in a variety of health settings, aiming to maximise income for people living in deprived areas whose health is likely to be affected by poverty. It enables Citizens Advice to work closely with disability organisations and Local Authorities to ensure that appropriate, expert advice is made available to families with disabled children. It also encourages the take-up of council tax and housing benefits, alongside other benefits entitlements, especially amongst those people and groups less likely to claim.This funding also includes an element to support the Adviceline Cymru telephone helpline service.

Face to Face Debt Advice

The Money Advice Service (MAS) have taken over responsibility from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills for the management of the Face-to-Face Debt Advice contracts with effect from 1st April 2012.

Other Not-for-profit advice providers in Wales

In 2013/14, the Welsh Government supported a number of Not-for-profit organisations in providing generalist and specialist front-line advice services on issues relating to welfare benefits; housing and debt.  Shelter Cymru; Advice UK; AgeCymru Partnership; RNIB; SNAP Cymru; Welsh Refugee Council and the Law Centres Network were amongst the organisations supported.
