Les Eckford is a retired veterinarian, who qualified at Edinburgh Veterinary School.

Les has enjoyed the experience of large animal farm work. He was particularly interested in disease control mechanisms while in veterinary practice. In the late 1970s he had experience of an Anthrax outbreak affecting the Midlands and Wales. 

After joining the Field service in Wales, Les handled bovine TB and animal welfare investigations. He has worked in the field epidemiology teams during Avian Influenza outbreaks in Midlands. Also the Classical Swine Fever cases in 2000 and FMD in 2001. He has extensive experience of engaging with a wide range of people. From farmers to senior policy makers and representatives of organisations, with a diverse interest in animal health and welfare. 

Les also has experience in specialised areas. They include meat hygiene and animal by-products. He has served as a veterinary adviser to the Welsh Government.

Les has a personal interest in goats and bees. He kept goats for many years and continues to keep a bee holding near his home.
