Cadw undertook research to gather evidence from the residents of the communities surrounding Neath Abbey about their use and perception of the Abbey.

The research also piloted the collection of wellbeing and heritage participation data, to be used as a baseline for comparison on how heritage participation has a positive impact on wellbeing against future research.
The research found that the perception of Neath Abbey and engagement with the Abbey by the community was good, however there was potential for improvement through a number of potential interventions. Raising awareness of the Abbey amongst local residents and further afield would potentially have a positive impact of the number of visitors, and more community engagement would help local residents to feel a sense of ownership.
Improved facilities onsite would encourage more visits, including better parking and toilets and the availability of refreshments. There is also a perception that there is not much to do at Neath Abbey, which discourages visits and repeat visits. Feedback showed that different types of events would be a good way to overcome this.
