General practice workforce: as at 31 March 2023

The main source of data used is the Wales National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS) which has been supplied and validated by NHS Shared Services Partnership.

Main points

In Wales, on 31 March 2023, there were:

• 383 active GP practices
• 2,383 fully qualified GPs with a Full Time Equivalent (FTE) of 1,583.2 (or 66.4% of the headcount); this includes partners, providers, salaried, retainers and active locums only; the headcount increased by 2.5% and the FTE increased by 0.1% since the same date one year ago
• 473 GP registrars (trainee GPs) with an FTE of 418.7 (or 88.5% of the headcount); the headcount increased by 8.0% and the FTE increased by 7.0% since the same date one year ago
• 8,143 wider practice staff (non-GPs) with an FTE of 5,911.9 (or 72.6% of the headcount); the headcount increased by 2.1% and the FTE increased by 2.6% since the same date one year ago

When broken down by specific GP types and staff groups, there were:

• 1,997 GP practitioners with an FTE of 1,442.3 (or 72.2% of the headcount); this includes partners, providers and salaried GPs but excludes registrars, retainers and locums
• 30 GP retainers with an FTE of 12.4 (or 41.3% of the headcount)
• 469 GP locums with an FTE of 128.5 (or 27.4% of the headcount); this only includes locums who performed work in the latest quarter only
• 1,434 registered nurses with an FTE of 1,042.4 (or 72.7% of the headcount)
• 1,348 direct patient care staff with an FTE of 947.0 (or 70.2% of the headcount); this includes professions such as pharmacists, dispensers, health care assistants and physiotherapists but does not include GPs or nurses
• 5,436 administrative or other non-clinical practice staff with an FTE of 3,922.6 (or 72.2% of the headcount)
