General practice workforce: as at 30 June 2023

The main source of data used is the Wales National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS) which has been supplied and validated by NHS Shared Services Partnership.

Main points

In Wales, on 30 June 2023, there were:

• 379 active GP practices.
• 2,388 fully qualified GPs with a Full Time Equivalent (FTE) of 1,576.8 (or 66% of the headcount); this includes partners, providers, salaried, retainers and active locums only. The headcount increased by 3.8% and the FTE increased by 0.9% since the same date one year ago.
• 446 GP registrars (trainee GPs) with an FTE of 397.5 (or 89.1% of the headcount). The headcount increased by 3.2% and the FTE increased by 3.2% since the same date one year ago.
• 8,212 wider practice staff (non-GPs) with an FTE of 5,951.3 (or 72.5% of the headcount). The headcount increased by 2.9% and the FTE increased by 2.8% since the same date one year ago.

When broken down by specific GP types and staff groups, there were:

• 1,992 GP practitioners with an FTE of 1,429.6 (or 71.8% of the headcount); this includes partners, providers and salaried GPs but excludes registrars, retainers and locums.
• 30 GP retainers with an FTE of 12.2 (or 40.6% of the headcount).
• 508 GP locums with an FTE of 135 (or 26.6% of the headcount); this only includes locums who performed work in the latest quarter only.
• 1,446 registered nurses with an FTE of 1,045.9 (or 72.3% of the headcount).
• 1,362 direct patient care staff with an FTE of 961.0 (or 70.6% of the headcount); this includes professions such as pharmacists, dispensers, health care assistants and physiotherapists but does not include GPs or nurses.
• 5,476 administrative or other non-clinical practice staff with an FTE of 3,944.4 (or 72% of the headcount).
