Introduction

A report which includes information on fires, location, cause, motive, casualties and false alarms attended. 

The analysis below relates to the periods 1 April 2024 to 30 September 2024 compared to the same period the previous year.

Main points

Fires

  • The Welsh Fire and Rescue Services attended 4,827 fires in this period, a decrease of 22%.
  • There were 1,930 primary fires in Wales, a decrease of 11%.
  • There were 2,834 secondary fires in Wales, a decrease of 28%. Since a large proportion of secondary fires occur outside, they are likely to be influenced by weather conditions.
  • In this period the only month to see an increase in secondary fires compared with that in the previous year was August 2024 (up 25% compared with August 2023). June 2024 saw the largest decrease (down 52% compared with June 2023) but this follows an 86% increase in the previous year.
  • There were 726 grassland, woodland and crop fires in this period, a decrease of 53%. 

Casualties

  • There were 4 fire deaths in Wales, 7 fewer than reported in the same period in the previous year.
  • There were 96 non-fatal injuries (requiring hospitalisation) in this period, 20 more than in the previous year.
  • A further 92 received first aid, were sent for precautionary tests or were advised to seek medical advice. This is 27 fewer than the number in the same period in the previous year. 

False Alarms

  • There were 8,619 fire false alarms in Wales, no percentage change compared with the same period the previous year.
  • There were 205 malicious fire false alarms, 5% fewer than in the same period in the previous year.
