The project delivered rail track infrastructure improvements in the Gowerton area and to provided improvements to Gowerton train station.

Specifically the project aimed to upgrade an 8km single section of track between Duffryn West (Llanelli area) and Cockett West (Gowerton, Swansea area) to double track and implementing improvements to Gowerton station.

The evaluation looked at a number of issues:

  • whether the infrastructure improvements have been delivered as set out in the business plan
  • examined the project management processes used for the project
  • examined the views of service users to investigate the impact that the improvements have had on rail use and their views of the improvements to the station

The project was completed in May 2013 and the redoubling of the track has increased the capacity on the line to allow for more services and allowed for more trains to stop at Gowerton station.
