EMA is a weekly allowance linked to satisfactory attendance, paid fortnightly to eligible students aged 16 to 18.
The data, based on applications received by 31 August 2021, are correct as at 1 September 2021.
Main points
- The number of both applications and approvals has shown a downward trend since 2010/11.
- In 2020/21, 18,690 (90%) of applications received were approved, 1,500 (7%) were rejected and 615 (3%) were incomplete.
- Of the approved applications, 9,185 (49%) were from first year claimants.
