Main points
- In 2022 there were 1.286 million employee jobs in Wales, 2.2% higher than the figure of 1.259 million in 2021.
- For the UK, there was also a 2.2% increase between 2021 and 2022.
- There were increases in 11 of the 12 UK countries and English regions between 2021 and 2022, with Wales having the fifth largest increase (2.2%).
- The change in Wales between 2021 and 2022 was spread across a number of industry sectors, with the largest absolute increase in the Transport and Storage sector (up 11,600) followed by the Accommodation and Food Service sector (up 11,000). The largest fall was in the Business Administration and Support Services sector (down 10,100).
- In 2022, the Health sector was the largest industry in Wales, accounting for 15.3% of all employee jobs, followed by 10.8% in the Manufacturing sector, 9.0% in the Education sector and 8.9% in the Retail sector.
- In 2022 there were 312,600 public sector employee jobs and 973,600 private sector employee jobs in Wales. The share of these jobs was 24.3% public and 75.7% private (in the UK this was 18.0% public and 82.0% private).
Please note that these estimates of public sector employee jobs differ to those of the official public sector employment estimates (Office for National Statistics). The official estimates should be regarded as the definitive public sector estimates for the English regions and UK countries.
