Dear
ATISN 16322
Thank you for your request which I received on 16 May 2022. You asked for the following information:
- How many new English speaking primary and secondary schools have opened in the last 10 years?
- How many Welsh speaking primary and secondary schools have opened in the last 10 years?
- Thirdly, does this mean there is no place for English speaking graduates in the Welsh education system.
With regard to question1 and 2, please see the accompanying document. With regard to question 3, there is no requirement for entrants into the Welsh education system to be Welsh speakers. We recruit to our programmes of Initial Teacher Education those who wish to teach through the medium of English as well as those who wish to teach through the medium of Welsh. The vast majority of our student teachers are studying to teach through the medium of English.
If you are dissatisfied with the Welsh Government’s handling of your request, you can ask for an internal review within 40 working days of the date of this response. Requests for an internal review should be addressed to the Welsh Government’s Freedom of Information Officer at:
