Main points
- In 2018/19, 6.2% of half-day school sessions were missed due to overall absence. 1.7% of these sessions were missed due to unauthorised absence.
- In general, overall absence has been falling since 2007/08. In 2018/19, overall absenteeism remained the same as the previous year.
- Unauthorised absenteeism increased by 0.1 percentage points over 2017/18, but has decreased by 0.1 percentage points from 2008/09.
- The percentage of persistent absentees in mainstream secondary schools increased by 0.5 percentage points in 2018/19. This percentage is now at its highest level since 2013/14.
- Illness was the most common reason for absence in 2018/19.
