A55 Junction 15 & Junction 16 improvement
We are building new junctions to replace roundabouts at Llanfairfechan (J15) and Penmaenmawr (J16).
Project status: planned
Start date: 2019
End date: 2021
Cost: to be confirmed
Design and build contractors: to be confirmed
Why we are doing it
We aim to improve safety and journey times along the A55. These changes will also make maintenance easier and improve our ability to deal with emergencies.
We have had external advisors review the options available for these junctions. They have recommended taht we need to do develop the preferred improvement options further. We have now appointed an external advisor and the procurement process to appoint an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contractor has commenced. Once appointed, the ECI contractor will develop the design of the preferred options to a stage where draft Orders for the scheme can be published.
We will replace the roundabouts at Junction 15 and 16 with height separated junctions. This means that side roads will go either under or over the main A55, with traffic joining the trunk road via a slip road instead of a roundabout. This will allow traffic on the A55 to flow more smoothly without having to slow down at a roundabout.
We will work with stakeholders to develop options for both junctions.
Option and design development: 2016-2018
Statutory process and public enquiry: 2018-2019
Detailed design and construction: 2019-2021
Environmental aftercare: 2021-2024
How we are consulting
We held stakeholder workshops in July 2008.
We hope to hold public information exhibitions in early 2017 once an ECI contractor has been appointed.
We will be appointing an ECI contractor in autumn/winter 2016.
