Series information:
16-18 year olds
- Proportion of 16 to 18 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) has gradually decreased since 2011, but increased slightly in 2018.
- The annual headline measure shows that, in 2018, 10.3% of 16 to 18 year olds were NEET compared with 9.4% in 2017.
- For the year ending quarter 3 2019, 8.6% of 16 to 18 year olds were NEET, compared with 8.8% the previous year.
19-24 year olds
- The proportion of 19 to 24 year olds that are NEET has been falling and now stands at around 16%.
- The annual headline measure shows that, in 2018, 16.1% of 19 to 24 year olds were NEET, similar to 2017.
- For the year ending quarter 3 2019, 15.5% of 19 to 24 year olds were NEET, compared with 15.2% the previous year.
Statistical sources
- The annual headline measure is published in ‘Participation of young people in education and the labour market’ using education data sources and the Annual Population Survey (APS).
- The quarterly measure is based on the APS (Office for National Statistics).
