I am pleased to advise Members of the Senedd I have appointed Dr Nerys Llewelyn Jones as the Interim Environmental Protection Assessor, Wales. She will commence her role on 1 March 2021.

Dr Llewelyn Jones will oversee the interim measures for environmental governance for a period of up to two years. Her role will complement the roles of Wales’ existing regulatory bodies.

Dr Llewelyn Jones is an accomplished agricultural lawyer with extensive experience in the sector and a breadth of knowledge of environmental law. As a managing partner of her own rural law practice, a Wales Landowner Panel Member and the Vice Chair at the Agricultural Law Association, she has extensive experience across Wales’ agricultural and environmental sectors.

This appointment forms part of my commitment to ensure leaving the European Union does not result in an erosion of our environmental standards.  In overseeing the interim environmental governance measures in Wales, she will consider issues raised by the public about the functioning of environmental law in Wales and provide me with her considered advice and recommendations. I will lay her reports in the Senedd, along with my response.

I am pleased Dr Llewelyn Jones will be joining us at a time where her expertise and experience will contribute to our understanding as we develop the permanent oversight body for Wales. I wish her well in this role.
