Universal Credit is a payment to help with living costs and is paid monthly in arrears. To be eligible you must be:

  • on a low income
  • out of work
  • self-employed
  • ill or self-isolating

You can apply for up to a 100% re-payable advance from the Department of Works and Pensions via the online journal, or over the phone.

You can check if you're eligible for Universal Credit on GOV.UK.

During the coronavirus outbreak, the minimum income in Universal Credit (known as the ‘Minimum Income Floor’) will be removed. This will ensure that self-employed people will be able to claim Universal Credit.

If you're self-employed you can find more information on eligibility and claiming Universal Credit on GOV.UK.
