We provide funding to local authorities to improve how easy it is for people to travel around their communities.

We prioritise programmes aimed at improving access to schools, and those that encourage walking and cycling.

Projects must involve cooperation between local authorities and the wider community, including schools.  School children must be engaged throughout the process.

We fund projects such as:

  • crossings
  • traffic calming measures
  • cycle paths
  • footpaths
  • secure cycle facilities (including stands and CCTV), lockers and changing facilities.

Local authorities can bid for funding on an annual basis.

In 2017 – 2018 we will be distributing £5.5m in grants from the Safe Routes in Communities Grant to 32 schemes across 20 local authorities.
