Electrification of the Great Western Main Line from Cardiff to Swansea will provide a strengthened east-west economic corridor and enhance Swansea’s role as an economic hub.

In March 2011 the former Secretary of State for Transport announced the decision to electrify the Great Western Main Line between London and Cardiff.

Following this announcement the Welsh Government, working with the Department for Transport and Network Rail, led on the development of outline business cases for electrification of the Great Western Main Line to continue to Swansea. Outline business cases were also developed for electrification of the south Wales Valley Lines network.
