The planning system plays an important role in facilitating renewable energy projects in suitable locations. At the same time it helps to balance the local environmental effects of proposed development. This research was prepared for us by Land Use Consultants and the Centre for Sustainable Energy.

The objectives of the research were:

  • To review the land use planning implications of different renewable energy and low carbon developments; and
  • To explore and understand local planning authorities roles in preparing local development plans and dealing with applications to facilitate renewable and low carbon energy development.

The research gave findings and recommendations for additional research and guidance.

This research has been used to create practice guidance for local planning authorities to help them take decisions on applications for renewable energy development.
