Childcare at Home Approval Scheme

Voluntary scheme for nannies providing childcare in the children’s own home.

The scheme is administered by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).

Parents using an ‘approved’ carer under the scheme are provided with some assurances on child protection, safety and understanding of child development, whilst being able to access tax or benefit support for childcare.

How to join

Those interested in applying can find further information about the application process on the CIW website or by telephoning 0300 790 0126 or emailing

  • By using an approved carer, you know that Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks have been carried out and basic criteria for childcare workers have been met.  Childcare workers approved under the scheme must have undertaken childcare and first aid training.  Parents will wish to check that the level of training completed by the approved carer meets their family’s needs.
  • By using an approved carer, you may be able to access tax or benefit support.

Child Carers

  • Increased employability through a nationally recognised approval scheme commissioned by the Welsh Government.
  • Recognised confirmation of childcare training and status.
