Under the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016, the Care Council for Wales gained new powers to lead the improvement of social care in Wales.

Social Care Wales (external link) came into being in April 2017.

What Social Care Wales does

Social Care Wales continues the work previously undertaken by the Care Council, regulating and developing the social care workforce, while also taking on a new responsibility to lead improvement across the sector.

This involves a range of activities from advising on social care research, to showcasing best practice.

In 2013, we established the Strategic Improvement Steering Group to advise on the establishment of Social Care Wales. In 2015, a transition advisory panel built on this work to support the change.

We provide Social Care Wales with an annual remit letter which sets out its funding arrangements and strategic objectives for the year.
