Advising the Welsh Government on matters relating to national population screening

Screening programmes are important public health initiatives as they allow for the early detection and treatment of potential health problems.

We provide policy direction, advice and guidance on national screening programmes for the benefit of the Welsh population. The programmes are managed and delivered by Public Health Wales on our behalf.  

Each of the four UK countries are able to determine their own screening policies. We all belong to an expert group known as the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC). The committee ensures that decisions on screening programmes are based on the best scientific and medical advice available. Public Health Wales has governance responsibility for antenatal screening only. Delivery of the programme is carried out by local health boards.
