Dr Rob Orford is the Chief Scientific Adviser for Health. 

Rob OrfordDr Rob Orford has been the Chief Scientific Adviser for Health since January 2017. His role includes:

  • providing Welsh government and ministers with advice relating to health science
  • professional lead for Healthcare Scientists in NHS Wales.
He is the professional lead for Genomics, Imaging, Pathology and Healthcare Science

He is involved in developing strategic national programmes in diagnostics and health science aimed at: 
  • addressing service challenges
  • improving quality and safety
  • driving research and innovation
  • promoting a patient centered system of value and continual improvement. 
He works closely with the Executive Directors of Therapies and Health Science, Health Technology Wales and is sponsor of the Welsh Scientific Advisory Committee.

He is an external working group member of European Scientific Committee for Health, Environment and Emerging Risks.

Previous work experience includes working as a post-doctoral scientist for Cancer Research UK and Medical Research Council and as a principal scientist and group leader for Public Health England.

He has a Honours degree in Molecular Biology, a PhD in Molecular Embryology from Portsmouth University and is a STEM Ambassador
