Cetacean Stranding Investigation Programme

From time to time, cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises, whales), basking sharks and turtles wash up on our shores.

Often, the reasons for these strandings aren’t clear. Our support (along with the other UK governments) for the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) provides us with information on how healthy the populations of some of our most important cetaceans are, and whether there are any underlying issues (such as marine litter, disease or pollution) which could have led to the stranding. We use the information to understand the threats to cetaceans and to help us develop policy. Information on previous strandings in Wales including the most recent reports, can be found on Defra’s website (external link).

If you find a stranded animal on our beaches – either alive or dead – the Marine Environmental Monitoring website (external link) will provide you with advice on what to do.
