Compliance and monitoring

Through the implementation of Welsh, UK and EU fisheries regulations, we are working to safeguard and develop sustainable and productive fisheries across Wales.

Fishing in Welsh waters is regulated by the Common Fisheries Policy. Inshore and territorial waters are further regulated with Welsh legislation and Byelaws. We are responsible for ensuring monitoring and control of all sea fishing activity in Welsh waters.

The regulations cover issues such as managing stocks, reducing pressure on those stocks by limiting catches, technical measures such as mesh size requirements and reducing discards.

Enforcement is crucial to ensuring high compliance with regulations so that fish stocks remain sustainable. We aim to maintain a viable fishing industry, whilst recognising the pressures facing vulnerable and protected marine species and habitats.
