The aquaculture industry is a growing contributor to the production of food globally.

The challenge for the Welsh aquaculture industry is to maximise the value of activities that can be undertaken sustainably, whilst minimising the environmental impact.

Aquaculture is one of the key food production sectors in Wales and helps to underpin sustainable economic growth in rural and coastal communities.

The Welsh Government is committed to doubling production of both shellfish and finfish aquaculture by 2020. This will be achieved through simplifying administrative procedures, making better use of European funding and developing effective collaboration between industry and research bodies.

The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund in Wales will focus on innovation and capacity building. The aim is to increase development whilst also promoting collaboration and links between farm operators and scientific bodies.
