These codes impose requirements and offer guidance relating to school admissions and appeals in all primary, secondary and middle schools.

They apply to the discharge of admission functions by:

  • admission authorities
  • governing bodies
  • local authorities
  • admission forums
  • admission appeal panels.

There is a statutory duty for these bodies to “act in accordance” with the codes.

The admissions code came into force on 8 July 2013 and applies to all school intakes from September 2014 to 2015.

The admission appeals code will apply from January 1 2014 to all appeals heard for the first time on or after this date. There is no right of appeal for the allocation of nursery places.

Neither code aims to offer guidance on every possible scenario.
