Support for the music industry in Wales

We want to grow the commercial music industry in Wales.

In 2018 we conducted a review of how we can support the commercial music industry in Wales. This resulted in a new plan to do this.

We want to make it easier for talented people to develop long-term careers in Wales. The music industry has established ways for musicians to be successful. Our aim is to make it easier for Welsh artists and to improve networks within the industry.

We will work with industry and others to achieve effective music industry support. Our actions focus on growing the sector and we know that we cannot achieve this alone.

We will:

  • Look at how to reform career development programmes to better accommodate individual need
  • Support grassroots music venues to help them remain viable
  • Explore how to improve access to rehearsal space for developing artists
  • Grow Welsh language music by improving access to industry support services and expertise
  • Connect schools with musicians and people working in the business through school tours
  • Think about how universities and colleges can prepare students for the music business
  • Review funding streams for the industry to make sure they are effective
  • Ensure that support is available across the whole of Wales

We held a workshop with the Music Venue Trust for owners of Welsh music venues and other industry people. Smaller venues closing is making it hard for new Welsh music acts to advance into the industry.

We have worked with other parts of government to make changes to protect small venues.

We are also exploring:

  • Ways of improving advanced training for people entering the music industry in Wales
  • Ways of promoting music industry career paths in schools

Support now available

Momentum Music Fund

Funding is available to support the development of Welsh musicians. We are working with the Arts Council of Wales, PRS Foundation, PPL and Spotify on the Momentum Fund. It offers grants to talented Welsh artists and bands to break through to the next level of their careers.

Funding of between £5,000 and £15,000 supports recording, touring and marketing. Artists must be at a turning point in their careers and showing growth potential.

Full details are on the PRS Foundation website (external link).

We also fund the Pyst project. It provides support for grassroots touring and micro music labels. Pyst helps small Welsh labels to sell their music to a bigger audience. by using Pyst’s networks and distribution channels.
