Management information update on contact tracing delivered as part of the Test, Trace, Protect strategy in Wales for 1 to 14 June 2020.

Data for 1 to 14 June
In Wales, during the period from 1 to 14 June, 1,309 positive cases were referred to local and regional contact tracing teams. This resulted in 1,752 contacts identified for follow-up, of which 1,553 have been successfully contacted and advised accordingly.

Data is based on management information reported by local and regional contact tracing teams during the first two weeks of COVID-19 contact tracing in Wales. This management information has not undergone validation or further data quality checks which are undertaken for official statistics. The new national digital support system will be used to underpin the future approach to reporting once the system has bedded in and the data has been validated.
The Chief Statistician has agreed to this early release of management information as it is in the public interest for the data to be used by Welsh Government and others in the context of planning around the COVID-19 outbreak.
It may not be possible to trace all individuals referred to the contact tracing service. For various reasons contact details will not have been provided for some individuals and others may not have responded to calls, texts or emails from tracing teams.
Positive cases that relate to a closed setting, such as a care home or hospital, do not result in contacts for follow-up.
The number of cases referred for contact tracing is greater than the number of new cases published by Public Health Wales due to differences in timing and the level of validation carried out. Contact tracing teams receive raw data from the laboratory testing system that can, for example, include previously identified positive cases. Public Health Wales provides data for surveillance purposes and uses data from a fixed time cycle for consistency of reporting and also validates the data to remove previously identified cases. We are carrying out further work to understand and explain these differences.
